Acupuncture

What is acupuncture and how does it work?

Acupuncture is designed to stimulate your body’s internal systems by engaging them through careful and precise insertion of very fine needles into key trigger points. Using carefully honed knowledge of those specific trigger points across the body, acupuncture needles are inserted gently into the skin by a certified acupuncturist. The insertion of the needle is nearly painless, only enough sensation to disrupt the nerve signals and cue your body’s response.

The acupuncture needles are left in long enough to engage your relevant body systems that jumpstarts rejuvenation, healing, and relaxation in a calm and comfortable environment. When performed by a certified reflexologist or acupuncturist, acupuncture is a safe and beneficial alternative or complement to other treatments for a variety of concerns.

“Balance is not something you find, it’s something you create.”

Acupuncture as a science and ancient art

Though it’s recognized by modern medicine as a valuable part of healing and treating many conditions, acupuncture dates back much further. It’s rooted in traditional Chinese medicine and  has been used for thousands of years to help alleviate pain and restore the balance of the body’s natural energies. These traditional roots translate into modern medicine as well. Acupuncture has now been recognized by the World Health Organization as a viable treatment for a number of conditions and symptoms.

The ancient use of acupuncture focuses on the harmony of life energies (qi) by chanelling them through established pathways (called meridians) in your body. Acupuncture helps guide and direct the qi back to its ideal location through the insertion of the thin needles into key areas to re-balance your body and energies. This was thought (and is now proven) to help stimulate a more receptive and responsive nervous system balance while reducing pain.

  • You may feel a pinch or some pressure as the needle is inserted into your skin, but this is unlikely. The needles we use are not much thicker than a strand of hair and you’re more likely to feel relaxed. There may be a sense of fullness during the duration of insertion, but there is no lasting pain or intense sensation that comes along with most acupuncture sessions.

  • Yes! When performed the high quality technicians and acupuncturists, acupuncture is a safe and comfortable experience with minimal risks. We use pre-sterilized and packaged needs, and discard them immediately after use.

On rare occasions, you may have some itching or soreness after your treatments or experience inflammation or topical irritation from acupuncture. If you have sensitive skin or bruise easily, speak to your acupuncturist before your session.

  • This is dependent on where the acupuncture is applied and what it’s intended to treat.

Results can last from hours to months, but your treatment plan can be tailored to the results and relaxation you’re craving once you know how your body responds to this slow-release balancing of energy and nervous system.

  • Our fine needles are unlike what you’d use for a shot or even when receiving a tattoo. These needles are so thin that they feel more like pressure than pinching pain you’d expect.

If you have a fear of needles, please speak to our booking coordinator about your worries. We are happy to support you in overcoming it to experience the relaxing relief of acupuncture.
